Microsoft has introduced new touchpad settings with the Windows 10 Creators Update to enhance multitasking and navigation. The new precision touchpad is an extension of a typical touchpad that you can use for controlling the mouse cursor on your screen. This new extension has more advanced settings and supports an extensive range of multi-touch gestures.

Microsoft’s latest OS has tweaks for gesture and click detection along with the new dedicated Touchpad page under the Settings app. Creators Update also includes new enhancements which are essential when pinching to zoom and detecting the left and right clicks. How to know your laptop has Precision Touchpad support:

Older devices might not have precision touchpad support, but newer devices such as hybrid laptops or other convertible devices include Precision Touchpad support. Here are the steps listed below for your help in determining if your Windows 10 device is able of using the multi-touch gestures.

  • Launch Settings and click on Devices
  • Click on Touchpad

You will see a message under the Touchpad settings page if your device has Precision Touchpad support. The message will state: “Your PC has a precision touchpad”. However, you can still access the Settings page even if it doesn’t have a Precision Touchpad support, but in that case you will be asked to adjust sensitivity.

How to enable or disable the Precision Touchpad:

It is easy t o enable or disable the precision touchpad. To enable the touchpad on, you just need to turn the Touchpad toggle switch on and to disable it, you need to turn the Touchpad toggle switch off. You also have the option to disable the touchpad automatically if you are using a traditional mouse and it is connected. To do that you need to clear the “Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected” check box. You c an also adjust the speed of y our mouse cursor by moving the “Change the cursor speed” slider.

When you use a track pad for clicking and selecting, there are many ways to customize the tapping behavior. On the Settings page under the “Taps” menu, you will see the “Touchpad Sensitivity” drop-down menu and you can adjust your touchpad’s sensitivity level from there.

Though the “Medium sensitivity” is the optimal choice for many users, but you have choices for other levels also, such as low sensitive, high sensitive, and most sensitive.

How to customize the scroll and Zoom feature

With Windows 10’s Creators Update, it is also possible to customize other gestures like pinch to zoom and scrolling.

On the Settings page under the “Scroll and zoom” menu, you can select to “Drag two fingers to scroll” or not by ticking or clearing the check box. Through the drop-down menu, you can also change the “Scrolling direction” that allows you to use a down motion to scroll up or down.

The “Pinch to zoom” feature is enabled by default, however, if you want to disable this feature, just clear the check box.

How to customize the three-finger gestures

Microsoft added new options in Creators Update one of them is allowing Windows 10 users controlling the gestures with multiple fingers.   • Select “Nothing” to disable the three-finger gestures.
  • To launch the Task View down to display the desktop, the “Switch apps and show desktop” option will let you use a three-finger swipe up and left and right for switching active apps.
  • To launch the Task View down to display the desktop, the “Switch desktop and show desktop” option will let you use a three-finger swipe up and left and right for switching virtual desktops.
  • You can turn the volume level up or swipe down for turning the volume level up or down by using the option “Change audio and volume”. You will skip to the previous or next track through a music app by swiping to left and right.

Through the three-finger gestures, you can also launch Cortana and Action Center or even play and pause songs through the music apps.

How to customize configurations for advanced gestures

Under Related Settings on the top-right corner of the Settings page, look for the “Advanced gesture configuration” to customize extra settings for Precision Touchpad.

The “Advanced gesture configuration” page will allow you to define the action for every swipe in reverse to using one of the default set of gesture actions from the “Three-finger gestures”.

For example, you can choose to record a modified shortcut or launch the Action Center through a three-finger tap.

To hide all the active apps aside from the one in focus, you can configure the three-finger swipes. To perform actions that are completely unrelated, you can also swipe down, left, or right.

How to reset the Precision Touchpad settings

Simply click the “Reset” button from the bottom of the Settings page to reset your Precision Touchpad’s custom settings. This action will revert all your settings to default one.
