Below the steps are given on how to change your username or password in major operating systems, online services, and other locations.

Change Your Username or Password

Important Note: You need to know the password of the account before changing it into anything else if you are the administrator or root of the system.

  1. Change the username and password in Windows 10

Change password

  • Press the start button on your keyboard or click the Start button on your computer screen
  • Type sign in the search field and then click on Sign-in options
  • To change the Password, click on the Change button

  • Open Control Panel on your system
  • Choose User Accounts
  • Click on the option Change the account name

Important Note: You can only change the account name for local accounts, not for Microsoft accounts.

Change password

  • Open Control Panel and there double-click the Users Accounts icon
  • Choose the account you want to change
  • Choose the option “Change my name” to change your username or “Change my password” or “Create a password” to change your password
  • Enter the new name or password that you want to use and click the Change Name/password

Important Note: Windows XP Home users are allowed to change the administrator password through Safe Mode.

Change the username and password in Mac OS X

Change Password in Mac OS X 10.6 or later  

  • Log in using an administrator account
  • Choose System Preferences in the Apple menu
  • Choose Users & Groups in the View menu
  • You may need to click the lock button if you find it locked. Type the administrator password
  • Choose the user account that you want to change
  • Click on the option Reset Password or Change Password
  • Type in the new password in the New Password and Verify fields
  • Enter the new password and click on the Reset Password or Change Password button again

Change password in Mac OS X 10.3 to 10.5.8

  • Log in using an administrator account
  • Choose System Preferences in the Apple menu
  • Choose Users & Groups in the View menu
  • You may need to click the lock button if you find it locked. Type the administrator password
  • Choose the user account that you want to change
  • Click on the option Reset Password or Change Password
  • In the New Password and Verify fields, type in the new password
  • Click the Reset Password or Change Password button after entering the new password
  • Click on the option OK if a dialog window pops up

Change password in Mac OS X 10.2 to 10.2.8

  • Log in using an administrator account
  • Choose System Preferences in the Apple menu
  • Choose Accounts in the View menu
  • You may need to click the lock button if you find it locked
  • Choose the user account you want to change
  • Choose the Edit User option
  • Type in the new password in the New Password and Verify fields and click OK
  • Click on the option OK if a dialog window pops up

Change password in Mac OS X 10.1.5 or earlier

  • Log in using an administrator account
  • Choose System Preferences in the Apple menu
  • Select Users in the View menu
  • You may need to click the lock button if you find it locked
  • Choose the user account you want to change
  • Choose the Edit User option
  • Type in the new password in the New Password and Verify fields and click Save

Change the username and password in Linux and Unix and most variants

All major variants of Linux, Unix and other variants also have access to the passwd command. To change your password, enter this command at the prompt. One thing that you need to take care before being able to change the password to a new password is, you need to know the existing password.

Most of the forums allow the user to change their password only through the account settings or profiles. Most companies do not allow users to change username and usually you must create a new account to do this.
